User Guide Sections 001 Through 010

Take a Guided Tour of TreasuryDirect to see for yourself how simple it is to set up an account and to buy and manage securities online.

If you're ready to open an account, review the information you'll need to have on hand to complete the easy, three-step process:

The introductory page also provides an opportunity to review account "Terms and Conditions", and “Learn more about Security Features and Protecting Your Account.” Clicking either of these links will open an additional browser window.

Please use the buttons and links provided on each page when you're managing your Treasury securities. For security reasons, using your browser controls to navigate (including the back, forward, and refresh buttons) will end your session.

Need more flexibility to manage your securities portfolio?

Linked accounts offer solutions to manage your specific financial needs. Establish and access Minor accounts for your children (in individual accounts only) or Custom accounts for your specific goals. You can convert your paper Series EE and I Bonds to electronic versions and they can be managed in your Conversion Linked account. Holdings for each Linked account are kept separately from your Primary account and can be accessed only through your Primary account.

Note: TreasuryDirect does not provide paper savings bonds or paper account statements. If you want a paper copy of your account information, you should use the browser's toolbar to print the relevant pages in your account that show your holdings.

Page Title: Individual Account Application

What you can do on this page

Individuals can open a TreasuryDirect account by completing all of the following sections of the online application:

Asterisks denote required fields.

If you leave the 'Give Your Account a Name' field blank, the account name will be personalized based on your first name as shown in Account Owner Information. You will be able to edit this personalized information at any time using the Account Info tab.

In the Bank Information section, we encourage you to abbreviate or condense the Bank Name and Name(s) on the Account. Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) rules limit the amount of space we can provide.

In the Submission section you certify:

  1. You have provided your correct taxpayer identification number. (This is typically your Social Security Number.)
  2. You are NOT subject to backup withholding.
  3. You are a U.S. person. (You must be a U.S. citizen, resident, or individual who is at least 18 years old with a valid U.S. Social Security Number. You must also have a U.S. address of record and an account at a U.S. depository financial institution that will accept debits and credits using the Automated Clearing House method of payment.)

HELPFUL HINT: After establishing a TreasuryDirect Primary account, you may create Linked accounts - Minor, Custom, and Conversion accounts. Holdings for each Linked account are kept separately and can be accessed only through your Primary account.

Answers must be typed as originally submitted. Failure to complete the appropriate questions correctly may result in a lock on your account, depending upon the number of attempts you make.

HELPFUL HINT

As an added security measure, TreasuryDirect may require you to answer one of your three Additional Security Questions when you attempt to perform certain transactions. Failure to answer the question correctly will result in a lock on your account, depending upon the number of attempts you make.
